Thinking of starting a high-quality blog network

March 6th, 2008 · 4 Comments

300x300_rss.jpgI’m thinking that the next project I’d like to start is a high-quality blog network - where writers are passionate about the subject matter and can write daily.  I’m at a point where I can afford to hire one or two writers to post regularly to get it started, but I still have a lot of things to consider:

  • Is it better to have them all on one domain and use subdomains or is it better to have many separate domains?
  • How will I monetize it?  Will using Text Link Ads mess up my PR (if I’m even going to worry about PR) or should I use other advertising methods?
  • Should I start doing this on a blog network I already have, though it has duplicate content right now?

These are just a few of many things I’m contemplating.  Have any of you ventured into creating a blog network?  If so, what was your experience?

Speaking from a bit of experience (I sort of have a blog network in that most of my blogs are sorta related and have similar names and are all linked together but I put them on separate domains …which I kind of regret) I think there is a real advantage to having one big site rather than several little sites. For the one big site solution, check out emomsathome.com that is the way she launched her network.

One advantage of many domains is that you can sell text link ads on every site…(which you do quite well!!) however rumors are flying that google is going to eventually penalize sites for selling links, so I am looking to dump that revenue stream in the near future.

I’m not really sure what the best approach should be …but with your track record, I’m sure you can make it work whichever way you choose to go!

Thanks for the insight! I did end up going with separate domain names after all - I figured that if the big blog networks do it that way, maybe I should too.

Those eMom blogs look great, now I’m thinking of maybe changing to the template they’re using…
