Raising a Forum

April 19th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Getting a forum going can be a long, tedious task.  I do have one forum that finally took off - but it took years to get to that point.  Now a have a new baby forum, and I’m trying to get it going, and in less than a few years.

Here’s what I’ve been doing:

  1. Hired a forum posting service: It’s pretty lame - but the forum was totally empty and I just wanted to fill some of that space.  It was cheap, too, so I really wasn’t at a loss there.
  2. Posted under a few aliases: Had a few conversations with myself, haha - as I’m sure I’ll continue to do for a while.
  3. Posted news under related topics: It provides fresh topics to chat about, and it works for the big guys, plus it creates lots of posts.  I thought this was essential for filling the place up with fresh topics.

And that’s it so far.  Do you have a forum?  How did you get it going?

sits empty for days sometimes, but I don’t mind, I’ve got plenty else on the go.

I’ve never built a successful forum so can’t help much, but making multiple profiles for yourself is rather interesting.

    good luck

I’m building (read: outsourced) my first forum. I’ve heard that it can be a lot of work to get it going. How are you monetizing your existing forum?

I have one forum but it’s growing stagnant at the moment. I really need toget it going again, after I get the site redesign finished - finally.

It is a lot of work! I have had many conversations with myself as well. As they say, fake it till ya make it ;)

Do you have phbb or vbulletin? The automated sign ups are killing me, even with the hacks I have in place. Grrr. Good Luck!
